After you no longer need to use a virtual disk, you must delete it to free up space on the physical media. Our experts tell you how this operation is performed in Windows 10.
Virtual disks are managed entirely in the GUI. The user’s actions differ slightly depending on whether they know the VHD file location directory or not.
In the first case, we immediately open the file Explorer. Right-click on the virtual drive to open the context menu. Select the item marked with a two.
After disconnecting the disk, go to the directory containing the image file. Expanding the context menu, we delete it by clicking on the line marked with the number “2”.
If the user does not know exactly in which directory the VHD file is located, we use a different option. We call the extended start menu with the key combination “Win+X”. Open the disk management utility by clicking on the line indicated in the screenshot.
We find the virtual drive in the General list. Right-click on the area with its description, indicated by the arrow in the screenshot. In the context menu, select “Disconnect”.
The confirmation pop-up window specifies the path where the image file is located in the system. Use file Explorer to navigate to the appropriate directory and delete it. Like any file, the VHD image is first placed in the trash. We clear it for complete removal.
The steps described by our experts will help you remove a virtual drive that has become unnecessary from Windows 10 in a few steps.
